Carbon Project Field Officer

About the role

Onja, a social enterprise that trains underprivileged youth into software developers, is looking for a Field Officer to support the delivery of a clean-cooking carbon offset project. The role combines distribution support, community engagement, data collection and project reporting. It suits someone flexible, reliable and adaptable, comfortable travelling to remote areas on the East Coast of Madagascar and enjoying working with people from all backgrounds.

Key responsibilities

• Support the planning and delivery of cookstove distribution, including household surveys and registration, coordinating logistics and keeping records.
• Build respectful, long-lasting relationships with participating households, community members and other stakeholders.
• Support and coordinate Onja operations team members in the field, resolve problems and communicate transparently with the team.
• Explain the carbon offset project to households and lead engaging, empathetic training sessions on stove use.
• Collect field data through surveys, monitoring visits, interviews, photographs, GPS records and other methods.
• Review data for missing, inconsistent or unusual entries and raise issues early.
• Maintain accurate records of stove distribution, household participation and stove use.
• Prepare field updates and contribute to internal reports, monitoring and external verification.

Required profile

• Commitment of twelve months, with potential to renew or extend.
• Great communicator with people from all backgrounds, open-minded, respectful and empathetic; able to lead training with countryside communities.
• Flexible and adaptable, willing to travel across the East Coast of Madagascar.
• Well-organised and detail-oriented, able to manage several activities at once.
• Growth mindset, curious about and able to learn technical topics such as carbon-project requirements and data systems.
