Surveillance Officer – Strengthening Infectious Disease Detection Systems (STRIDES)

About the role

PATH is seeking a Surveillance Officer to lead technical surveillance activities for the STRIDES project in Madagascar. The role will strengthen detection and analytical capacity for infectious diseases across human and animal health.

Key responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day support and oversight of surveillance activities in Madagascar.
• Develop, coordinate and implement epidemiological and laboratory surveillance for zoonotic, epidemic‑ and pandemic‑prone diseases.
• Lead outbreak investigations at national, regional and international levels.
• Review and revise project and donor reports, draft publications and external communications.
• Coordinate with ministries of health, district staff, and development partners across assigned geographies.
• Contribute to national guidelines and advise governments on best surveillance practices.
• Serve as regional and country back‑stop ensuring alignment with JEE results, IHR and other global standards.
• Produce and disseminate high‑quality data, situation reports, bulletins and health risk assessments.
• Support internal learning and capacity building within PATH.

Required profile

• Master’s degree (or international equivalent) in epidemiology, public health, veterinary medicine or a related field.
• Minimum of five years of relevant experience in infectious disease surveillance or related public health work.
