Chief Mechanic (Tugboat) – 3-Month Fixed-Term

About the role

Rio Tinto QMM is seeking a Chief Mechanic to join the tugboat team at the Port of Ehoala for a three‑month fixed‑term contract. The role is based in Fort Dauphin, Madagascar, and involves daily maintenance and operational oversight of one of the company’s tugboats.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure the proper functioning of engines and auxiliary systems so the tugboat remains operational at all times.
• Maintain and update all administrative documentation related to the vessel.
• Track and manage crew documentation and certifications.
• Process and follow up on requests or orders required for tugboat operations.
• Guarantee compliance with internal company standards and oversee scheduled maintenance.
• Promote safety aboard the tugboat and organise crew work activities.

Required profile

• Malagasy nationality.
• Holder of a captain’s licence – OQM, CM3000 or higher.
• Current SMED or RMED certification and basic safety training.
• Up‑to‑date medical fitness, TALI, CAEERS, SSO or Sureté 1&2, ERM.
• Strong organisational sense, safety awareness and team‑leadership ability.
• Proficiency with office computer applications.
• Fluent in French and Malagasy; English is an advantage.
