Agricultural Advisor (12 Positions)

About the role

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is recruiting Agricultural Advisors for 12 positions in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The role provides hands-on technical support to producers and producer organizations (POs) and implements the field activities of the RIZ PLUS project in the advisor's area. It is a 2-year renewable contract, reporting to the Project Head of Mission and working closely with the project's technical and coordination teams.

Key responsibilities

• Provide hands-on technical support to producers and POs in the intervention area.
• Promote the project's good agricultural practices, especially in rice growing.
• Organize and lead demonstration sessions, farmer field schools and practical training.
• Support POs in their structuring and functioning, and build producers' capacity in farming techniques, post-harvest management and marketing.
• Link supported producers with input suppliers and markets identified by the project.
• Monitor demonstration plots and farms, collect and send technical data and performance indicators to the project.
• Report field constraints to the team leader and draft weekly and monthly technical reports.
• Take part in coordination meetings and supervision and monitoring and evaluation missions.
• Ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguard principles and inclusion (gender, youth).
• Represent the project to producers, POs and local authorities.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (Bac+3) in agronomy or an equivalent field.
• At least three years of experience providing technical support to agricultural producers or agricultural extension.
• Experience in similar rural development projects is an asset.
• Good command of French and Malagasy.
• Ability to work independently, in a multidisciplinary team and under pressure, with frequent travel to rural areas.

Required skills

• Good knowledge of agricultural technical itineraries, particularly rice cultivation.
• Good writing of technical reports.
• Computer tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of producer training methods (field schools, demonstrations) is an asset.
